Dr. Heather Brown’s research program is grounded in a neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based approach that centers Autistic perspectives, identities, and lived experiences. She is the Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta and Director of the Autism, Neurodiversity and Academic Achievement (AIDAN) Lab.

 

Her work bridges research, practice, and community knowledge to support more inclusive and affirming educational systems where neurodivergent individuals can thrive. Broadly, Dr. Brown studies how Autistic people experience learning, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging across K–12 and postsecondary settings. Using participatory and mixed methods, she collaborates closely with Autistic students, educators, clinicians, and community partners to examine barriers to participation and identify pathways to flourishing. Her research focuses on three interconnected areas: Autistic academic achievement and writing; campus belonging and accessibility; and neuro-affirming educational practices.

 

Through SSHRC-funded projects and community-engaged research, she explores how writing, sensory environments, institutional practices, and social dynamics shape Autistic students’ educational experiences. She also designs and evaluates professional learning initiatives that promote autism acceptance and reduce exclusionary practices. Dr. Brown’s work has been published in journals including Autism, Frontiers in Education, Human Development, and The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, and has attracted over $2.3 million in external funding. Her research ultimately seeks to shift educational support from fixing deficits to removing barriers and nurturing dignity, connection, and growth.
